Advanced technologies – additive manufacturing and 3D printing, automation and robotics, advanced materials, precision machining, precision measurement and 3D scanning, digital manufacturing, and Industrial IoT – are revolutionizing manufacturing. From April 30 to May 2, 2018, the Boston Convention Center will transform into an innovation space, a beacon for hands-on learning, and a virtual machine powered by advanced technologies. Expected to be the leading smart manufacturing event in the U.S., the Smart Manufacturing Experience 2018 will draw attendees from all industries and experience levels looking to future-proof their businesses. The event is co-sponsored by SME, AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology and founding partners Mazak, The Robert E. Morris Co., Methods Machine Tools, and IMTS.

Smart manufacturing is described as the next Industrial Revolution. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, smart manufacturing is defined as fully integrated, collaborative manufacturing systems that respond in real time to meet changing demands and conditions in the factory, supply network, and for customer needs.

The Smart Manufacturing Experience features multiple levels of learning and interactive opportunities for attendees, including:

  • Learning Lab with panel discussions and presentations about trends, case studies and product announcements.
  • Intimate Knowledge Bars to ask industry experts about specific manufacturing challenges.
  • Mixed Reality Experience to see the integration of machines, systems and data with live factory analytics, virtual machine demonstrations, and live modeling and simulation.

Attendees will see myriad speaking sessions and formats to address the many facets of smart manufacturing.

Half-day workshops will focus on discussions about critical technologies emerging or already in place within manufacturing businesses. These workshops kick off the Smart Manufacturing Experience, occurring the morning of April 30, preceding the opening lunchtime keynote session. Sessions include:

  • Optimal Precision Machining
  • Navigating Digital Manufacturing & Design
  • Fundamentals of Additive Manufacturing
  • Getting Started with Robotics
  • Where Smart Manufacturing Happens – The Intersection of the Digital Thread and IIoT
  • MTConnect Testbed

Keynote presentations from the main stage will address weighty topics like big data and artificial intelligence. Jeff Ma of Twitter will discuss the importance of setting goals as well as tracking progress and productivity along the way, and how gaming, analytics, and competitive tracking can lead to more useful, constructive feedback and more motivated teams and employees in his “Ten Times Better: Maximize Performance through Big Data” keynote.

Technology futurist Jack Shaw will address how Intelligent Systems are transforming business, commerce, and society, showcasing examples where this technology is shaking the world. His keynote, “Artificial Intelligence-Business Systems and Processes That Think for Themselves,” will make attendees think too.

Embracing the popular TED Talks concept, the Smart Manufacturing Experience will introduce a speaker format called SMARTx Tech Talks. These presentations, by visionary leaders, will motivate and inspire via shorter, inspirational talks about smart manufacturing, transformation, growth, advancement, and expansion for the future of manufacturing. SMARTx will feature speakers from Microsoft, MIT, and GE Ventures. Additionally, Katie Linendoll, tech contributor to the TODAY show, will serve as the fourth SMARTx Tech Talks speaker, sharing her expertise around innovation, and how technology is changing the way we live, work, and think.
